clefts again

when the surf is flat
a paddling option are rock clefts.
You need to be ultra-wary
as an unexpected wave's energy
can be amplified in the confines of a cleft.

A plastic (sit in) kayak and greenland paddle
are a delicious combo in these environments.

I'll wave to the fast tourers while i dawdle in the rock gardens....

mangrove playground

a neglected kayak playground
to my mind are mangroves!

check them out at high tide
with a (preferably) shorter boat
and you are bound to have fun
weaving your way between the branches
(lose a point for every touch of boat, body, blade
if you achieving a perfect zero, go faster and tighter!)

i really enjoyed the combo
of a shorter boat (wavesport z)
with the new gearlab kayakid paddle

dragging, wading, and hammering

dragging

  • if you haven't dragged your kayak, you are missing out - plastic is the preferred material here.
  • my local national park has closed the access road to my nearest beach for a major upgrade so a longer drag was needed.
wading

  • a lot of sand has been dragged away from rocks from an intense storm (east coast low) about 4 weeks ago............ so more water around rocks.
hammering

  • after 30 mins of dragging and wading i am confronted with shore break.
  • I have noticed that if it takes some time and effort to get to a destination, one is more likely to go out and get hammered.
  • funny enough i am paddling a P&H Hammer..........beats me why more paddlers don't get into Hammers (think of a lengthened playboat)
  • paddling in straight lines is fine, but i find a a bit of 'twitch' is hellish fun!   : )

solstice surf spray

how clever am i getting a solstice vid ready before the actual solstice?
.............actually it's from a solstice one year ago
(the gloves and balaclava indicates it's the winter solstice)
a few 'roos jumping about at the start and
a few 'spraybows' lurking at the backs of waves
sometimes you can get the angles just right
- miss the 'roos and capture the rays

Foam and rain

both children of an east coast low
off the coast of australia -
massive swells generating the foam,
and lots of rain from the intense low pressure system,
this video is a 'on the run' sketch which, i hope,
shows the ocean is beautiful in all its moods
